take them through a refinement process before i begin to add them into the clay. if wet i begin the process by letting the materials dry out thoroughly. the materials are then crushed, which can take a large amount of energy as some of the materials begin life as larger rocks. once crushed it is then washed, and rinsed through. then the material is divided into different particle sizes from fine dust to larger particulate, giving varying results through the making and firing activities. strewn along black beaches. so many natural wonders - and this is before you look up to the stars, with a vista of light from the aurora borealis dancing in the sky - as I said I have fallen deeply……. jökulsárlón, the glacial lake where glacier breiðamerkurjökull sends icebergs out into the atlantic ocean, we stopped at vik a small village at the southern end of Iceland. it was then that we discovered the black beach at reynisfjara. not only a place of natural beauty but of great legend, and it is this idea of the telling of histories and stories that I feel is so fundamental to this mountskill quarry some of the triassic sandstone recovered from the quarry was excavated from a building site that had been cut into the rock surface. this exposed the strata formations and enabled me to extract material that was in a pristine state - mountskill quarry i had processed and refined some wild clay, excavated from our allotment in helsby. having added this into a porcelain form, the results were beautiful. as the wild clay fires at a lower temperature than the high fired porcelain it melted, causing some movement in the form. i have recently been out to the village’s surrounding fields and have discovered and excavated more clay, which is currently drying out. i can then begin to process the materials - manchester, london road the porcelain forms have texture from the materials added to the clay. the materials added into the porcelain are soot, ash and brick dust, collected from the fireplaces of the apartments. creating a tangible connection between the personal histories, and moments in time, - skye, the black beach the materials have a much lower melting point than the porcelain. i have lost a few kiln shelves as pieces have melted and became stuck to the shelf. to avoid this, i plan to make forms from two pieces - skye, the black beach waterfalls flowing upwards onto the rolling peninsula - the roar of the wind surrounding you. then the calmness of a rainbow as the brightness of the sun reflects on the dark waters of the loch - skye, the black beach we have celebrated milestone birthdays here, in the winter months, hunkered down with log fires blazing, while storms rage outside. it is from these fires that i have gathered the ashes - vilnius it was during his time that i met maya kitti, who is also a fellow nomad and potter. once a week i and maya, would visit the center. each thursday we would slip slide our way to the center through the february snow and ice -
