nomatter - crafted, in your hand

physical experience

my nomatter collections have a very different approach, these have no added materials and rely simply on the qualities of the clay, so are purer in nature. using porcelains and stoneware clays, these pieces are domestic and functional. using form and surface textures, i want the user to connect and engage with the piece physically -drinking vessels of weight and size to fit into the palm of cupped hands, texture to run fingers over, a tactile and visceral experience.

the echo of memory

i take inspiration from my nomadic travels, by interpreting the land and cityscapes I pass through. echoing the strata of materials within a hillside or lines and patterns made from the shadows created within a building to give pattern and texture to a ceramic surface.

translated into clay

i contrast these elements with the form itself. rather than cover the entire surface, i will only add texture to certain areas. likewise i will only glaze the interior and some of the exterior body. this allows me to add another dynamic layer to the form - playing on the weight and balance of the piece, as well as adding an understanding of purpose and function. these developing elements create a coherent visual language within the ceramic pieces.
